"Steelheading for mostly halfpounders can be good one day, but slow the next, then back to good again." A nice steelhead caught on a sculpin on the 15th (Kiene's). Flows jumped from 1400 up to 1700 CFS Thursday.
Mixed reports from Kiene's through last weekend. Read Kiene discussion on half-pounder flies.
From Kiene's: "not a lot of caddis activity yet for some reason as far as evening hatches."
No new reports. Flows down to 1750 CFS.
A few reports on Kiene's, including a 20-incher and 18-incher here and here. Flows steady around 1900 CFS.
See photo of nice wild half-pounder on Kiene's. Also another report of a few tugs. Flows still great at 2000 CFS. Discussion has slowed...as has fishing? Half-pounder class Saturday 10:00 at Kiene's.
Kiene's discussion: "Caught a 14 inch halfpounder after work today swinging a Swinging Ching mid-river." Bill Kiene: "Perfect flow for wading the Lower American R. It will be 2,000 cfs on September 1, 2012. Get out there early and late in the day for Half-pounders. Cast across and down with a floating line, mend a little and let it swing through to the bottom. Keep moving slowly down stream to cover more water." Half-pounder class on 9/8.
Numerous Kiene's posts on half-pounders. Post 1: "The fish was only another 12"er but I was happy to get some action on the surface." "Aaron landed this nice adult hatchery Steely on a Brown Birds Nest. Swinging right under the top." Plus a lively debate on the definition of "half-pounders." Flows remain around 2400 CFS, which is wadeable in many areas.
Heard on Kiene's: "Quite a few half pounders in the lower American right now. Noboby seems to be talking about them. Catching them on the usual Spey and Soft Hackle patterns." "Steelhead are ranging in size from resident rainbows or smolts of 8 to 12 inches, to around 20 inches and are taking nymphs under indicators. The smaller fish are even slurping dry flies in the evening. They tend to be bunched farther upstream than the stripers, from Rossmoor Bar to Sailor Bar."
No new steelhead reports.
"A few halfpounder steelhead, as well as the occasional adult to 4 pounds have also been caught. Fishing for steelhead should pick up, as well. However, at a flow of 4,500 cubic feet per second, wade fishing is quite difficult."
No new reports, but big debate on Kiene's re: the merits of fishing for smolt / juvenile steelhead / trout on the American.
"An added bonus has been the arrival of summer-run halfpounder steelhead to 22 inches joining numerous smolts from 8 to 14 inches, according to Mike Powers of American River Flyfishing."
