"The winter run is all but over here but there should be some spring steelies poking up into the system soon…and this rain should help." Rain has not noticeably increased flows.

Lots of halfpounders or recently stocked smolt (per Kiene's). "Recent rains have brought good numbers of half pounders and a few large adult steelhead into the system. Swing caddis pupas and traditional steelhead flies".

"The steelie fishing has been, well, not so hot of late." "Fished deep and big for nada. There were a few fish working the may flies though." Flows scheduled to drop to 800 CFS by 3/7. Currently 1500 CFS (vs 3000 avg).

"The release from Nimbus Dam to the American River was reduced again to the lowest in a very long time — to 1,450 cfs ...There has been an influx of fresh fish, mostly small, but in great numbers. “I’ve had reports of guys catching 50 or 60 in an outing,” he said." Very low at 1450 CFS (vs 3500 avg).

"There are steelies in the river — a mixture of true half pounders (there are lots of pesky hatchery smolts down low too), downers and a few fresh adults." Spring run steelhead are in, according to Kiene's. Flows down to 1400 CFS (vs 3500 avg).

"There are steelhead spread throughout the system, from Watt Ave up to the dam..[and] lots of salmon fry emerging from the gravel." "The Lower A is picking up already...", and "Lots of Steelhead in the Lower American River", says Bill Kiene. Fisheries biologist says 5X the number of steelhead from 2 weeks ago. Lots of hookups and fish caught according to the discussion. 1800 CFS (vs 2000 avg).

"American River opener [January 1] — pretty darn good...some fish weighing up to 10 pounds. ". But doesn't sound as hot on Kiene's discussion (lots of testosterone). 1900 CFS (vs 2000 avg).
