Slightly high, but stable for 3 days. Lots of dries: little yellow stones, caddis, PMD's, craneflies. Also attractor patterns. Nymphing with caddis, mayflies, stones. No chrome reported below; counts are low.

Exit the salmonflies and stones. Enter the caddis. Also PMD's, PED's, yellow sallies. Nymph mid-day. Flows settling between 775 and 800 CFS after reaching 950 last friday. "The last couple of hours can be awesome, so stay late if you want some of that epic dry fly fishing" (Fly and Field).

Residual salmonflies and golden stones in upper section. Otherwise, caddis, PMD's. Hot weather should stimulate caddis further. Flows jumped from 850 to 1000 CFS today so call ahead.

Flows stabilizing. Summer steelhead infiltrating. Good counts. Target them. Heavy through july 4. Wow, just checked flows -- they spiked up to 750 monday (from 650). Call ahead first.

Salmonflies abating in lower stretches, but only halfway done in upper. Mayflies and caddis will replace stones. Avoid spawning beds.

Water somewhat high (5750 CFS) but has dropped and cleared. Salmonflies, big time, fish the banks where they make babies. Try bulkier patterns to cope with the high flows.

Opening for the Lower Deschutes River is just around the corner. The Deschutes opens up on April 23rd.
Fishing is usually plenty good as soon as the river opens up since the trout haven't been picked on in several months. They are on the dumb side of things, and a dumb fish is a good fish.
