weekly highlights from the best fly fishing reports
"STEELIES SHOWING Salmon fishing here is pretty much over, though anglers continue to get some fish at Verona and Yuba City. Up around the Oroville Wildlife Area, there are steelhead to be had. The 1-3 pounders are munching nymphs, egg patterns, plugs and roe. Read Kiene discussion -- fish caught over the last week.
"steelheading was very good, both in the main river all the way down to Boyd’s Pump and in the Low Flow Section. Fly fishers are dead-drifting nymphs and egg flies under indicators . The biggest problem for anglers fishing the Low Flow Section is avoiding the salmon, which may not be targeted."
"Fishing is fair and improving. Salmon are dropping eggs throughout the low flow section. Best of the egg bite is in the morning and evening on sunny days. Start with an egg pattern and a small amount of split shot above the fly to fish shallow water where salmon are spawning. Some sporadic BWO’s hatching mid-morning. Add a BWO nymph during the hatch. In the afternoon, switch to an egg with a caddis pupa dropper. Concentrate on drop-offs, deep riffles and pools. Bring lots of bright egg patterns. Steelhead are hot! 3X tippet is essential to have a chance to land the big ones. So far, reports of 2 steelhead close to 10 pounds. Steelhead average 4-6 pounds with plenty of juveniles to keep it interesting. Best fishing is in the low flow section. High flow is still not wadeable." Read on Kiene's about near-drowning on the Feather.
Kiene's: "Heard there are steelhead in the Lower Feather." "fishing for steelhead on the Low Flow Section of the Feather was good last week... Fly fishers dominated drifting nymphs and egg patterns under indicators."

"Fishing is fair and improving. Flows are normal in the low flow and high but dropping in the high flow. High flows are bringing good numbers of salmon and some steelhead into the system. Best fishing is early and late when steelhead hold in riffles and tailouts. Midday, steelhead will move to deep pools. Steelhead fishing will improve when cooler temperatures get salmon on their redds."
"some small steelhead were being caught in the Low Flow Section, mostly on drifted roe and nightcrawlers. Fly fishers were finding some action on dead-drifted nymphs under indicators.
8/14: "The Low Flow Section was producing a few small steelhead on dead-drifted nymphs under indicators."
"there’s been some decent fishing for steelhead on the Low Flow Section, according to Brian Clement of American Fly Fishing. He said fly fishermen are catching six to 12 steelies a day on nymphs dead-drifted under indicators."
"Bradbury said that David and Morgan Patrick of Fish Ripper Guide Service got into a mix of fish below the Outlet on Sunday, including steelhead to 5 pounds, stripers and a salmon." See combat fishing pictures on Kiene's.
No new steelhead reports. Salmon season has begun.
"On Monday July 9th Scott reports that the low flow section is loaded with steelhead in numbers not seen in years." P.S. Salmon are in.
"there are some nice chrome fish moving through the lower river." "Steelhead fishing continued to be very good in the Low Flow Section, especially on small nymphs dead-drifted under indicators."
