4/21 -- EXCELLENT

Baetis! Sah-weet!

We are absolutely crushing the trucha on fluff baetis; there are slicks of bugs floating down the water, so you need to have the right fly mixed in among them.

Lower waters of the San Juan River are a bunch of fun - it's a great place to escape the crowds.

No baetis? Well, you should throw on a cream annelid and drop your favorite midge larva pattern -- you will get fish!

4/20 -- EXCELLENT

San Juan River Fly Fishing Report from Chris Taylor at Fisheads San Juan River Lodge.

The midge hatch has been epic. I am seeing large clusters from 10:00am till 4:00pm! The best fishing will be with midge pupa and larvae, size 22 and 24, clusters are working well. You can find fish eating midges of all colors, dark midges have been best, black, brown, dark gray and olive. Some fish have been eating cream as well. Try fishing BWO's from 11:00am to about 3:00pm. Dark brown and olive have been the best colors in a size 22 and 24. Back to midges in the evenings. Black and brown have been killing it! Colored larvae will catch fish all day long, red, orange, white, black, pink, apricot...... Bunny leaches are great attractors! Brown, Black, purple, and white Eggs the size of a pea in pink, orange, apricot, peach and cheese are all working well.

Water flow: 500 cfs

Visibility: 36 inches

Water temperature at mid-day: 41 Degrees F

Water condition: Moderately Turbid

Best time of day to fish: All day long, best dry fly fishing from 11:00 to 3:00

Best stretch: The whole quality water section is fishing well!
