weekly highlights from the best fly fishing reports
"Flows are dropping into perfect shape on the UPPER SACRAMENTO RIVER. I took the quick 35 minute drive to some of my favorite water and found happy fish. Rubber legs and golden stone nymphs were all I fished. Guessing I touched around 30 fish, with around 20-22 solid hook-ups and around 15 landed. Fishing was GOOD." "Just like a few of it's neighboring waters, the Upper "Sac" is just starting to spit out Stoneflies and a few Salmon flies. Best hatches of these big aquatic insects can be found along the lower third of the rivers 35 mile stretch." Kiene's board: "Hatches have been sparse but fish are looking up."
"Water conditions are manageable but still considered high at 1,800 CFS near Lake Shasta. Fishing has been good. A few stoneflies coming off along the lower river. Fishing action dies off mid day then comes back to life in the late afternoon through early evening. Be careful and use a wading staff."
5/6: "Still on the high-side, but way better than last week! Go and fish! Water color is great. Be careful and use a wading staff." Flows slightly higher since then.
"Conditions more suited to whitewater sports than fishing will last for a few weeks and limit the amount of fishable water to the largest runs with shorelines that offer access as flows drop." "be careful if venturing out. It should continue to drop and be fishable within a week."

"Fishing okay. Water conditions are best up by Dunsmuir, but small fish. Bigger fish are happening in the lower river, but the productive spots are spread out and limited. There have been some good reports coming out of this river lately, but not consistently."
