"The leaves are changing, the temperatures are falling, and the bite is heating up. Flows on both tailwaters remain low (+/- 1,000 cfs average) as both lakes are 7'-8'+ below power pool. Therefore, wadable water is usually an option over the course of the day. Generation on the White continues to yo-yo which requires a meticulously planned day on the river. This may require fishing up river in the am and down river in the pm... or vice versa. Fish move more often this time of year so taking this approach is quite productive." "Scuds, sow bugs, pheasant tails, caddis and midges should cover most nymphing situations. Streamers size 6-10 are also working at various times of day or when fish are more active. Remember the area above the state park will close on November 1 to protect spawning browns."
"Water releases have been averaging 1,000 with highs to 6,000 cfs. Generation has been a soft 1-2 units around the clock. This is allowing wade fishing in certain areas as well as good drift fishing. Scuds, sow bugs, pheasant tails, caddis and midges should cover most nymphing situations. Streamers size 6-10 are also working at various times of day or when fish are more active."
Bull Shoals: "Water releases have been averaging 1,000 with highs to 6,000 cfs. Anglers are picking up quality fish using a variety of patterns and techniques. Nymphing, swinging soft hackles, midging and streamer tactics are all working depending on the situation you encounter on the river. As fall approaches browns will start moving into spawning staging areas. Blue wing olive mayflies and tan micro caddis will also start hatching so have a variety of patterns to cover these anticipated fall hatches."
"Water releases have been averaging 2,000 with highs to 6,000 cfs. There have been several days with no generation making good wading. Anglers are picking up quality fish using a variety of patterns and techniques. Nymphing, swinging soft hackles, midging and streamer tactics are all working depending on the situation you encounter on the river."
"Water releases have been all over the place but heaviest in the afternoon/evening for 8-12 hours to 6,000 cfs.
"Fishing is about to get real good in less than a month I say this because it's about to be BIG brown trout time going all the way into February. I think we still have another month of hopper fishing so if you want to target this bite make sure you can be readily available on an “on call” basis to be able to hit it right. Dry Fly Fishing – If the water is running where there is enough current along the banks you will do alright."
"The fishing is fair at this time but not as great as it was but then we are also entering another full moon phase this month as well when the fish will feed primarily at night."
"This past sunday Mike Jackson and his wife Mickey spent the week fishing the White River with fellow guide Richard Ramsay and then with me this past Sunday Morning. Seven brown trout in the net but failed to get the camera out in time to take a picture of the 22 inch brown trout Mike got which as it turns out is his best to date."
"Hopper season is ON. Water temps continue to be higher than normal, and fish need some extra care when playing and releasing them. Keep them in the water as much as possible. We are seeing some heavier generation at times, and this helps with stream temperatures." "The best time to fish is early morning. The bite is much better and it is more comfortable for the angler. It can get pretty slow in the afternoon."
"Hopper fishing is hit or miss but when there on some nice browns are being caught. Generation was sporadic last week with flows ranging from 1-3 units early in the week and extended periods of no generation later in the week. During periods of generation, hopper patterns and streamers are working well. During periods of no generation, the fish are spooky and long leaders ending in 6X – 7X with size 18 and smaller midge patterns are providing the most consistent action."
"Starting to gear up for hopper season. Grasshoppers are becoming mature and will soon be available to fish in mass numbers. We should be there in another 3 weeks or so. Water temps continue to be higher than normal, and fish need some extra care when playing and releasing them. Keep them in the water as much as possible. We should see a little heavier generation over the next few weeks which will help with stream temperatures." "The best fishing continues to be on the upper river from the Catch and Release section below Bull Shoals Dam down to Wildcat Shoals. The Catch and Release section below Bull Shoals dam has been particularly hot. The best time to fish is early morning."
"Water releases have been all over the place but heaviest in the afternoon/evening for 8 hours 2,000-9,000 cfs. Generation has been sporadic all last week. Some days had periods of no generation while other days ran around the clock with 2-6 units. Hopper fishing is hit or miss but when there on some nice browns are being caught. Nymphing is excellent and producing the best for numbers."
"Wadeable Water – Midges-Scud-Etc." "Water temps continue to be higher than normal, and fish need some extra care when playing and releasing them. Keep them in the water as much as possible."
"On the White, we have had moderate generation with no wadable water. The hot temperatures have caused the water to get a bit warm in some locations and this has affected the bite, particularly on the White. The upper stretches (from Bull Shoals down to White Hole) are not affected. Be careful when fighting fish in the lower river, so that you do not over stress them. The hot spot has been the upper river from the Catch and Release section below Bull Shoals Dam down to Cain Island."
"Sulphur mayflies continue to hatch on the White River with PT’s as the go to fly on both higher and no generation water."
"All the tailwaters are fishing well. Plenty of low water opportunities have wade fishers rejoicing. Mornings are better than afternoons. Heavier flows are the norm in the afternoon as the weather heats up."
"Great time to be nymphing. Water temps continue to be higher than normal, and fish need some extra care when releasing them."
"Fish are pushing up river in an effort to reach colder and oxygenated water. As a result, pressure on the upper ends of the rivers has been intense; especially on the weekends." "Great time to be nymphing. Catch rates have been high on Bull Shoals tailwater with an occasional nice brown or perhaps larger than average rainbow."
"On the White, we have had significant periods of wadable water all week. The wade fishing has been spectacular. The hot flies were zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead), pheasant tails, copper Johns, gold ribbed hare’s ears and green butts."
"The sulphur hatch has started but has turned sparse with the warm weather on Bull Shoals tailwater." "The water has been so low that navigation of the White River has been difficult at times."
