weekly highlights from the best fly fishing reports
10/21: "Just like a few days ago we are hearing mixed reports some are saying streamer fishing is great some say it's so so ... It's the Yellowstone it changes by the minute. I wish I had something different to say about the Yellowstone, we just haven't received any consistent reports... Guys are having good days out there nymphing but there are a lot more people coming in to the shop with moderate to slow days. It should be pretty blustery over there for the next few days so I would be wary of getting blown around all day."
"prediction is for 23 to 25 mph from the West. High of 50. Haven’t had any reports for the last couple of days (not surprising, given the weather), but the same stuff should be working. Primarily nymphs and streamers. Yeah, that’s not very specific."
"I have been fishing the stone from top to bottom. Bottom is fishing better when the wind isn't blowing. Smal girdle bugs and flashy pt's nymphs under a indicator has been working best. If you are on the upper river a size 14 purple haze fished solo has fooled plenty of decent trout."
"Hoppers! Fishing small bouncy legged flies has been the main game. Nymphing can be challenging due to a large amount of algae growth on the river bottom of most stretches. In addition to hoppers people are getting fish to rise to a variety of attractor patterns, little PMD type dries, ants, crickets, and the list goes on. Have fun!" "With fall approaching, it could only mean one thing to people that share a passion for large Brown Trout, STREAMER SEASON!"
"The Yellowstone River is fishing good as well. Flows on the Stone are low at 2,100cfs and weedy in some spots; so floating stretches from Grey Owl to Mallards or further toward town (Livingston) has been better in the afternoon. 'Below town' is fishing even better. Early mornings can be chilly so no need to be first out there. Mid-afternoon and late evenings are perfect for fishing with midnight stones patterns; while nymphing caddis pupa will certainly pick up a hungry trout or two."
"Fishing is definitely picking back up late morning and by lunchtime or shortly after, firing on all cylinders. Yes, there are still some hoppers, ants, beetles etc (Terrestrials) that are definetly of importance. We are also seeing fall baetis starting to show & some of the Fall drakes -for more simple terms- definitively larger mayflies than the itsy-bitsy baetis. Could be Grey as well as Green drakes."
"Things are looking up. Cold nights are turning the fishing on, and aiding in breaking some of the moss up that we have had all summer in the valley.
"With the shorter days and the cooler nights, temperatures on the river are dropping, and the fish are starting to be more active. Good reports have been coming in from Carbella down to Emigrant, and people floating east of Springdale have been telling us very good things here at the shop."
"The Stone continues to be inconsistent. Early mornings are the best with the trout. There are many midnight stones out and dropping a small girdle bug off a Fat Frank or chubby has worked well. Tricos are also present in the am. Small attractors such as royal wullfs, para adams and ants have all fooled trout."
"We need some cooler weather for this river to really get back into shape. Below Livingston there are sporadic reports of great hopper fishing throughout the day. But, most of the best fishing is happening early in the morning and tapering off throughout the day. Water temps are warming up quickly, as it is hitting 70 in Livingston by noon most days." "What we are seeing now on the Yellowstone is productive dry fly fishing in the early morning until around noon, and then the afternoon seems to shut down for a while.
"Good fishing still holding up on the Stone. Although with hot weather, it's getting technical out there. Water conditions are good as far as clarity goes. Water temps are getting up there- especially in the afternoons. Time to get on early and get off. Fishing is picking back up in the evenings however once the direct sun gets off the water. Look for the hopper bite to gradually get better and better."
"Outstanding fishing to be had on the Stone. Conditions from top to bottom are once again prime with no forseeable mud or problems coming from T-storms. Dry fly game is back on in full force and reports have been very positive. Terrestrials are starting to kick in and become a much bigger factor in the fishing game than in the weeks past. Did someone say hoppers?"
"GRG’s owner floated this river the past five days and reported nothing but great-ness. Those were his words." "The stone has experienced some thundershowers up in the Park that has sections of the river fishing great to poor. Picking the right float is the most important part of your day."
"You can't do any wrong, except for catch whitefish on every nymph under the sun. The Big Bugs are now on their way upstream with large numbers hatching up and into Yellowstone Park. The Stone is the place to be right now - the drop and clear is the name of the game and some of the best fishing of the year on the Yellowstone - I would highly recommend getting on it now."
"What a difference a week makes – last week gnarly deep-nymph rigs. This week, seems like every fish in the river is looking up."
"Probably not yet . . . but maybe in a few days. It’s floatable and fishable at the current flows, but, so many other waters are fishing better."

"Still big and brown. Spiking hardcore. 18000 cfs and climbing. Big and dirty. See you in a toward end of June."
"Still dropping and is slightly fishable in your soft pockets and seams. Streamers, streamers and some more streamers. It is going to get warm again so this window might close in a hurry. If you are going to float, be careful! Water is still big and you have to be ON IT!"
