weekly highlights from the best fly fishing reports
10/22: "I was on the Lower Yuba on Saturday and was impressed by another push of salmon into the system. There were about 5 or 6 areas where the salmon are actively on redds. This is up from last week. There were three areas that had multiple pairs of salmon on the redds, as many as 8 pairs. I floated from the Parks Bar Bridge to the Daguerre Point Dam. The fly fishers looking for trout and steelhead staged behind the salmon were out and active. The fish seem to be more concentrated in the areas where you see salmon right now. Using troutbeads or egg flies with small mayfly or caddis droppers is the way to go. Try switching up where you place the egg, up top or at the end. Sometimes it makes a difference."
"there are about four areas where salmon are starting to settle in and dig redds. Not a bunch, maybe 4 pairs or so in each area. This is enough to get the trout on the bite. In past years there are usually 1 or 2 major areas below Parks Bar Bridge where you will encounter a large amount of salmon on the redds. So far this hasn't held to be true, we don't have the numbers that I'd hoped for yet. Keep crossing those fingers. There has also been some caddis activity in the lower river and this has the fish eating caddis nymphs and dries and emergers. They are still looking up on warmer days. They are also taking hopper patterns. All in all the fall fishing is heating up but the best is still to come." 10/14 (on Kiene's): "Managed three good sized fish on egg pattern and copper johns. Hooked two monsters - one that broke me off and the other threw the hook. When I retrieved it the fish had destroyed the copper john. Cheap fly or tough fish; I'm going with the latter. Had a salmon brush by me as he swan downstream. At the end of the day I crossed to the north side and managed to convince a few fish to rise to dries. Couldn't set, but still fun."
"Fishing is good. Some salmon in the river dropping eggs. Salmon are not throughout, but if salmon are found you can bet there are trout behind them looking for eggs. Small midges and BWO nymphs are producing some big rainbows in the morning. In the afternoon, switch to a rubberleg stone with a caddis pupa dropper. Trout rising to caddis, PMD’s and midges in the afternoon. Look for pods of fish actively rising along the flats. Reports of a few steelhead caught in the last week."
"The Yuba is just about to explode. I have had some really good days of nymphing with egg paterns, caddis, and small baetis patterns. The last couple of trips out there I have been hooking 25-30 rainbows per day. The fish are not really dialed into eggs yet but there are a handful starting to look for them." "We caught fish on troutbeads. We caught fish on dries, we laughed when some smaller fish wanted our flies but couldn't fit them in their mouth. We cursed as we set too early, We laughed when we immediately recast and the same fish took it the second time, By the way this doesn't happen often on the Yuba."
"I hooked 3 decent fish and missed a few more. Some came up and pushed the fly or dashed up and refused it. Most of these fish were in from 2 to 4 feet of water." From Kiene's: "While I only managed one fish on a dry fly (hopper), I had better success indicator fishing."
From Kiene's: "I had about a dozen grabs landing 8, rainbows ran 10-16". Effective patterns were Jimmy rubber legs, military mays, and copper johns."
No new reports, but flows are low at 650 CFS (vs. 900 avg). Guided trips now available from Jon Baiocchi and Keith Scott. Read on Kiene's about the stub winged stoneflies on the Yuba.
"Fishing is fair to good. Flows remain high but wadeable at 1,305 cfs. Walking the bank fishing hoppers 3 inches off the bank is producing some nice rainbows. Add a caddis pupa or PMD dropper for best action. Concentrate on areas where there I good amounts of vegetation along the bank. Not a lot of action from big trout rising to PMD’s and caddis at dusk. Look for the egg bite to start in September when temperatures cool. The Yuba closes above Hwy 20 Bridge August 31st."
No new reports. Flows steady at 1580 CFS.
"This is my favorite time on the Yuba…Hopper Time! In the mornings, when there’s not much surface activity, fish dark AP and Birds Nests under indicators along the edges. When it gets hot…and it will get hot…he hoppers start moving around. Most grasshopper patterns, along with Stimulators will entice plenty of strikes from rainbows to 19 inches."
From Kiene's: "Well the hopper fishing on the Yuba was really good today." Mostly in the afternoon.
"Best fishing is from 2-4pm with rainbows feeding on grasshoppers along the bank. Swinging soft hackle caddis and PMD’s in tailouts are producing some hot fish mid-morning."
No new reports -- just a discussion on access. Flows still around 880 CFS (vs 925 avg).
No real reports on trout (only shad). Kiene discussion 1 and discussion 2. Flows down to 880 CFS.
No new reports -- only shad -- but must be "fair" at least. Flows at 1100 CFS (vs 1050 avg).
No new reports, but Kiene discussions here -- http://www.kiene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27319 -- and here -- http://www.kiene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27175. Flows down to 1200 CFS.
